Ok, so it doesn't have a whole lot to do with actual education, but it is still true!
There are several things we are not taught in college that come up in actual classroom settings. For example, when I went to college the first time around we were not shown how to incorporate state standards into our lesson plans. We were told to familiarize ourselves with the standards, but not shown how to come up with a school curriculum plan. It was very embarrasing when I went to do student teaching and my cooperating teachers had to sit me down and explain this to me.
Another thing I was not taught was I needed to work in cooperation with the SPED teacher when coming up with lesson plans. It made my writing plans easier when I discovered what was expected of me.
There were some very large gaps in my knowledge when I went into my student teaching. In fact, the school I student taught at did not accept students from the college I attended because of a history of unprepared student teachers. They took a chance when they accepted me, and I worked very hard to perform at the level they expected of me. I am happy to say that after I left the school, they started accepting more student teachers.

Podcast
I have subscribed to Just Vocabulary by Jan Folmer. These podcasts are about 4-5 minutes long each and covers two SAT/ACT vocabulary words per cast. Jan Folmer gives several examples of the word, definitions of the word, and also the spelling. I can see this being a big help to students looking to improve their vocabulary, or their test scores.
I liked how Mr. Folmer introduced and expanded on the words. The podcasts were short enough to keep a student's attention, but long enough to instruct.
One thing that I did not like was the computer voice saying the words. It reminded me of bad telemarketing calls.

Hello
Hello all. Hope you don't mind but I am going to use the same blog that I created for a previous class.
My name is Tereza Kamenar and I am the mother of two wonderful children. Matthew is thirteen and hoping to get a car soon (oh boy), and Lezlee is nine and her ambition for the future is to be a lawyer and horse trainer. What a combo!
I hold a BS in Secondary Ed with an English endorsement. I substituted for two years after graduating, and then was the Director of Education and Center Director for a Sylvan Learning Center for three years. I moved to the Omaha, NE area about a year ago hoping to start a teaching position but, alas, there just wasn't a need for English teachers. I am currently working on Offutt Air Force Base in the Base Education Office.
Hope you have an enjoyable term!

EDUC 553
I always think having access to Google is a great thing. The homepage is very informative, and it is my preferred search engine. I have used Google Earth many times, and being able to get street-shots make it fun for students.
The Comic Creator is a great way to get the creative juices flowing for students. This would be a fun tool to use when doing any kind of writing lesson, or even history. Students are able to use their imagination to make lessons fun.
